SPEEDOMETER NOISE DIAGNOSIS

To: ALL RANGE ROVER DEALERS

The quickest and most effective methods for resolving speedometer noise complaints are as follows:

1.

Road test the vehicle to verify that the noise is actually coming from the speedometer or cable. A mis-adjusted transfer box neutral warning switch
is often misinterpreted by the customer as a speedometer noise.

2.

Lubricate the upper speedometer cable to within 1" of each end of the cable.

3.

Any vehicle with a gold colored Smiths' angle drive, should be fitted with a silver colored Jaeger drive. Always ensure that there is an adequate
amount of lubricant at the cable end of the drive.

4.

Lubricate the rear speedometer bushing with a small amount (one or two drops MAXIMUM) of light weight oil. The bushing can be accessed
without speedometer removal, between the angle drive flange and instrument housing rear face.

5.

Slightly loosen the two screws that attach the angle drive to the instrument housing and road test the vehicle. Move the angle drive to centralize the
drive pin to the speedometer. This will be the point of quietest operation. Re-tighten the screws and road test again.

6.

If the noise persists, a determination must be made as to whether the noise is in the cables/transducer/angle drive or the speedometer/housing. The
easiest way to do this is simply remove the angle drive from the housing, leaving the cable attached and road test.

7.

Should the noise be in the speedometer/housing1 inspect the white instrument housing for warpage. This will be most noticeable at the upper
corners where it attaches to the black bezel. If the warpage exceeds 1/8 inch, the white housing may be twisting the speedometer assembly and
should be replaced. In these cases, the speedometer will be noisy while in the assembly, but will usually relax and stop making noise after the
housing is disassembled.
