SUBJECT:
Base Idle Setting at PDI - New Vehicles
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
All New Vehicles
MODEL:
Range Rover, Discovery, Defender
DETAIL
As a result of changes to an engine's internal resistance that occurs during the "break in period", a reduction in the volume of air required to idle takes
place over the first 1000-1500 miles. To avoid the risk of this type of effect leading to an OBD idle speed control fault, follow the recommendations
below when checking/setting base idle as part of the PDI procedure.
ACTION REQUIRED
Follow the procedure described.

PROCEDURE
On New Vehicles at PDI
1)
Fully warm up the engine (VERY IMPORTANT).
2)
Disconnect the purge valve.
3)
Turn off any electrical accessories.
4)
Connect an accurate tachometer (NOT VEHICLE TACHOMETER), clamp the idle speed control air by-pass hose and where required set the base
idle to 450 - 460 RPM (adjusting screw location identified with an arrow in the figure).
On In Service Vehicles
If the vehicle has covered less than 1000 miles use the PDI procedure to set the base idle to 450 - 460 RPM. If the vehicle has completed in excess of
1000 miles follow the same procedure but reset to 525 +/- 25 RPM (the Currently specified value). For more detail refer to Service Bulletin P93/19-001.
