SERVICE ACTION

Engine Breather Freezing

SITUATION:

BREATHER ICING IN COLD DRIVING CONDITIONS

Vehicles driven in ambient temperatures below -20° C (-4° F), at speeds of 97kph (60 mph) or higher for a period in excess of one hour may experience
a condition where the part-load breather pipe becomes blocked by ice. The blockage forces all the breather gases through the full-load breather. In
extreme circumstances the full-load breather may also become blocked which increases the crankcase pressure.

A blocked breather will result in poor driveablity, lack of performance or the potential for oil leaks. The pressure can rise to a level that blows out the
camshaft seals or unseats the dipstick.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL ENGINE BREATHER KIT

In the affected areas at the next service opportunity, install the engine breather kit as outlined in this Service Action bulletin.
