Drive Belt: Service and Repair
Power Steering

REMOVE

1. Prop open the hood and disconnect the battery negative lead.
2. Loosen the idler pulley bolt and remove the fan belt.
3. Loosen the alternator mountings and remove the drive belt.
4. Loosen the power steering pump mountings.
5. Pivot the pump and remove the drive belt.

REFIT

1. Locate the driving belt over the crankshaft and pump pulleys.

2. Adjust the position of the pump to give a driving belt tension of 4-6mm (0.19-0.25 in) movement when checked by thumb pressure midway

between the crankshaft and pump pulleys.

CAUTION: Do not use the pump casing as a point of leverage when tensioning the power steering drive belt. Damage to the pump casing may be
caused leading to fluid leakage.

3. Maintaining the tension, tighten the pump adjusting bolt and the top pivot nut.
4. Refit the fan belt and adjust the tension to give 4-6mm (0.19-0.25 in) movement when checked by thumb pressure midway between the crankshaft

and water pump pulleys.

5. Refit the alternator drive belt and adjust to give 4-6mm (0.19-0.25 in) movement when checked midway between the power steering pump and

alternator pulleys.

6. Reconnect the battery negative lead and close the hood.
7. Check adjustment after running engine at fast idle speed for 3 to 5 minutes if a new belt has been fitted.
