Steering Gear External Components
8. Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm using a suitable extractor.
9. Remove the pitman arm, using pitman arm extractor MS252A.
10. Remove the pinch bolt attaching the universal joint to the power steering box.
11. Loosen the nut securing the tie bar to the chassis.
12. Remove the bolts securing the tie bar to the steering box and move the tie bar aside.
13. Remove the fasteners attaching the power steering box to the chassis side member.
14. Withdraw the power steering box.
REFIT
1.
Refit the steering box to the chassis side member and tighten the four Nyloc nuts to 81 Nm (60 ft lb).
2.
Refit the tie bar to the steering box, and tighten the tie bar securing nut to 81 Nm (60 ft lb).
3.
Reconnect the pinch bolt, attaching the universal joint to the power steering box, and tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft lb).
4.
Refit the pitman arm.
5.
Refit the drag link and secure.
6.
Lower the vehicle to ground level.
7.
Remove the sealing plugs and reconnect the flexible hoses to the steering box.
8.
Remove the sealing plug and refit the flexible hose to the power steering pump.
9.
Ensure that the steering wheel is correctly aligned when the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the steering wheel and reposition on the splines to obtain this condition.
10. Remove the filler cap from the power steering fluid reservoir. Fill the reservoir to the oil level mark on the dipstick attached to the filler cap with
the recommended fluid and bleed the power steering system.
11. Check the fluid level and replace the filler cap.
12. Check, and if necessary, adjust the steering box.
13. Test the steering system for leaks, with the engine running, by holding the steering hard on full lock in both directions.
CAUTION: Do not maintain this pressure for more than 30 seconds in any one minute, to avoid causing the oil to overheat and possible damage
to the seals.
14. Close the hood.
15. Road test the vehicle.
