Steering Gear Squeak

CONDITION SUMMARY:
STEERING NOISE RESULTING FROM FLUID CONTAMINATION
Situation:
The customer may complain of a squeaking noise from the bulkhead area when turning the steering wheel. On affected vehicles the repairs in LTB00021
"Steering Gear Noise" must be completed prior to evaluating this noise.
The noise level does not change with road speed but may vary depending on speed of steering wheel rotation and temperature. It is possible that the
power steering fluid has become contaminated.
Action:
Should a customer express concern, and the repair in LTB00021 on affected vehicles has been unsuccessful, flush the steering system with fresh fluid as
specified, and replace the steering gear and reservoir. Exercise caution to ensure extreme cleanliness at all stages of this repair.

To reduce spillage of fluid on the vehicle, cover the area beneath the fluid reservoir with suitable rag.
