RADIO - NOISE ON UNITS WITH PREMIUM SOUND
FORD 1984 TEMPO, CROWN VICTORIA
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, CONTINENTAL
A condition of radio noise may exist on some vehicles which may be caused by charging system or electric fuel pump whine or by other electrical
interference. The Mark VII/Continental may be more susceptible to fuel pump whine while the other vehicles may exhibit alternator whine. To service
the above condition, the following procedure should be performed:
1.
Remove the antenna cable from the radio
^
If the noise/whine goes away, refer to Shop Manual Section 35-01 for further diagnosis.
^
If the noise/whine is still present, then proceed with Step #2.
2.
The amplifier should be removed and sent to the authorized Ford service station for modification. The modified amplifier will have the necessary
circuitry modification and pig-tail wire with a ring lug (#10 hole) crimped to the end. This ring lug should be securely attached to the vehicle seat
back reinforcement with a self-tapping 3/8" long #10 conductive finish screw, Part No. N801846-S36MG (it will be necessary to drill a pilot hole
in the reinforcement).
3.
With the addition of the plastic feet on the Mark VII amplifier, it will be necessary to re-locate one of the existing mounting holes in the package
tray to reinstall the amplifier.
