Windshield Wipers - Inoperative
WIPERS - WINDSHIELD - LOOSE OR BROKEN PIVOT MOUNTING BRACKET

ISSUE:
Inoperative windshield wipers on 1982 through 1986 Continentals may be caused by a broken or loose windshield wiper pivot mounting
bracket. The spot welds that attach the windshield wiper pivot mounting bracket to the cowl top panel may have come loose causing the
inoperative windshield wipers.
ACTION:
To correct this, install a new service windshield wiper pivot mounting bracket and bracket reinforcements. Refer to the following detailed
service procedure for installation instructions.
1.
Turn air suspension switch located in the luggage compartment to the "off" position.
2.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
3.
Remove the wiper arm and blade assembly.
4.
Remove the wiper arm and pivot shaft. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 35-60.
5.
Remove the wiper motor.
6.
Raise vehicle on a hoist about two (2) feet.
7.
Remove the left front fender. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 47-12.
NOTE:
Place fender on a soft cloth to avoid scratch.

8.
Locate the wiper pivot mounting bracket on the inside of the cowl, Figure 1.
9.
Drill out any of the spot welds that are still holding the wiper pivot mounting bracket to the cowl top panel, Figure 1.
