Low Oil Warning Lamp - ON When Starting On An Incline

LAMP - "LOW OIL LEVEL" WARNING LAMP 
ILLUMINATION AFTER STARTING ENGINE WHILE 
PARKED ON AN INCLINE - VEHICLES BUILT 
THROUGH 4/15/96

1995-96 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
The low oil level warning lamp may illuminate on some vehicles when starting the engine while parked on an incline. This may be caused by sensitive
instrument cluster software and/or the location of the oil level sensor in the oil pan.

ACTION:
Install a new instrument cluster and/or revised oil pan. The new cluster has a revised warning strategy and the new oil pan has a revised mounting
location for the oil level indicator. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1.

Verify the engine oil level is correct.

2.

If the warning lamp is illuminated only after the engine is turned off and restarted within 2 minutes, perform the following Steps:

a.

Verify the "EEPROM" level of the cluster:

b.

Cycle the ignition key to the "OFF' position.

c.

Depress the "DTE/ECON" and 'TRIP" buttons simultaneously.

d.

Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position and immediately release the buttons.

e.

Switch the message center display by pressing the "MENU" button until "EEPROM" is displayed:

f.

If the "EEPROM" level is 3 or less, replace the cluster.

g.

If the "EEPROM" level is 4 or greater, proceed to the next Step.

3.

If the warning is displayed when the engine is initially started when parked on an incline, or if directed to go to this Step by performing Step 2:

a.

Install a revised oil pan.

b.

Refer to the appropriate year Continental Service Manual, Section 03-01, for procedures.

The level 3 and earlier cluster software would display the warning if the engine is turned off and then restarted within 2 minutes. This does not allow
adequate time for the engine oil to drain back into the crankcase. The level 4 and greater software allows for an 11 minute drainback period.

The revised oil pan has the oil level sensor located 4 mm (0.157") lower than the previous design and is less susceptible to display oil level variations
when parked on an incline.
