ISSUE
The fuel tank may be slow to fill during the last 4 to 8 L (1 to 2 gallons), the fuel gauge may not read full, or the gauge drops rapidly from "F" on some
vehicles. This may be caused by the Fuel Limit Vent Valve (FLVV) not allowing adequate venting while fueling, the fuel level sender or the fuel gauge
not being calibrated properly.
ACTION
Replace the FLVV, the fuel sender, and the Virtual Image Cluster (VIC). Refer to the Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the fuel tank as described in the 1998 Continental Workshop Manual, Section 310-01.
2.
Remove the FLVV by pressing it downward while turning the FLVV counterclockwise 1/4 turn, then lift it out of the tank.
3.
Remove the evaporative emission valve from the tank by carefully pulling it upward out of its grommet.
4.
Replace the FLVV and evaporative emission valve assembly by reversing Steps 2 and 3.
5.
Remove the fuel pump as described in the Workshop Manual, Page 310-01-7.
6.
Remove the fuel level sender from the fuel pump.
a. Disconnect the black/blue ground wire from the sender bracket.
b. Disconnect the yellow sender wire at the in-line connector.
c. Remove the retaining screw from the bottom of the sender bracket retainer.
d. Lift the sender upward to disengage the upper bracket.
7.
Install the replacement sender on the fuel pump by reversing Step 6.
8.
Reinstall the fuel tank as described in the Workshop Manual, Section 310-01.
9.
Replace the VIC as described in the Workshop Manual, Page 413-01-54.
NOTE
THE PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) MUST BE RECONFIGURED AFTER REPLACEMENT OF THE VIC. REFER TO THE PATS
CONFIGURATION COMMAND INDEX IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 419-01B.
NOTE
BOTH (ALL) IGNITION KEYS MUST BE AVAILABLE WHEN RECONFIGURING THE VIC.
