Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair
Non-Functional
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Disconnect key warning switch electrical connector.
4. On models equipped with ignition switch cap, use locking type pliers to twist cap from lock cylinder.
5. Using a 1/8 inch drill bit, drill out retaining pin. Do not drill deeper than 1/2 inch.
6. Place a chisel at base of ignition lock cylinder cap, then strike chisel with sharp blows to break cap away from cylinder.
7. Using a 3/8 inch drill bit, drill down middle of ignition lock key slot 1 3/4 inches until lock cylinder breaks loose from breakaway base of lock
cylinder.
8. Remove lock cylinder and drill shavings from lock cylinder housing.
9. Remove retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator, then clean all drill shavings from casting.
10. Inspect lock cylinder housing. If any damage is present, replace housing.
INSTALLATION
1. Install actuator and ignition switch.
2. Install trim and electrical parts.
3. Install new ignition lock cylinder.
4. Install steering wheel.
5. Ensure lock operates properly.
