Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

    The internal parts of each hydraulic valve lifter assembly are a matched set. If these are mixed, improper valve operation may result. Therefore,
disassemble, inspect and test each assembly separately to prevent mixing the parts.     Conventional type hydraulic lifters are used on all 1982---85
engines, except 1985 V8-302 H.O. 1985 V8-302 H.O. and all 1986---88 V8-302 engines are equipped with roller hydraulic lifters. Pushrods used on
these engines have a collar at the upper end and must be installed in this position. To replace valve lifters, proceed as follows:

1.

Remove intake manifold and related parts.

2.

Remove rocker arm covers.

3.

Loosen rocker arm stud nuts or bolts and rotate rocker arms to the side.

4.

Lift out pushrods, keeping them in sequence in a rack so they may be installed in their original location.

5.

Using a magnet rod, remove valve lifters and place them in sequence in a rack so they may be installed in their original location.

6.

Reverse procedure to install.
