Horn Switch: Service and Repair
On 1982---84 models
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
On models with tilt wheels, remove upper column extension shroud by unsnapping from retaining clip at 9 o'clock position.
3.
Remove steering column cover attaching screws and the cover, then the signal lever.
4.
Carefully lift wiring connector plug retainer tabs and disconnect the plugs from switch.
5.
Remove switch retaining screws and lift up switch assembly.
6.
Reverse procedure to install.
On 1985---88 models, the horn switch is integral with the steering wheel hub cover.
1.
Working from behind steering wheel, remove steering wheel hub cover by pushing retaining posts outward with a suitable drift.
2.
Remove steering wheel to shaft retaining nut. Discard nut.
3.
If no marks are present, scribe alignment marks on steering wheel and shaft to aid in installation.
4.
Using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel from shaft.
5.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque new retaining nut to 30---40 ft. lbs. On vehicles equipped with speed control, check slip ring for damage
and slip ring grease for contamination before installing steering wheel.
