Compass: Description and Operation

Compass Sensor Module

The compass sensor module detects which direction the vehicle is pointed and relays the information to the electronic compass display. The module is
attached to the base of the inside rear view mirror support.

Electronic Compass Display

A digital compass display is incorporated into the instrument cluster . The display illuminates whenever the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or ACC
position.
The display indicates which direction the vehicle is pointed (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W or NW).

Panel Control Dim Switch

The intensity of the electronic compass display can be adjusted manually by using the panel dim control switch.

Compass Accuracy

Magnetic mounted devices like antennas and luggage racks should not be located on the front third of the vehicle roof. Placing these devices near the
compass will cause inaccurate directional readings. If these devices must be used, accuracy may be improved by recalibrating the compass while the
devices are installed on the vehicle.

Driving near power lines or driving in the area of large iron or steel structures can temporarily change the compass's heading. If the compass remains
inaccurate after driving near such objects, manually recalibrate the compass.

Most geographic areas (zones) have a magnetic north compass point that varies slightly from the northerly direction on maps. This variation is four
degreesbetween the adjacent zones and will become noticeable as the vehicle crosses multiple zones. A correct zone setting eliminates the error. Refer to
