Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Rear
Overhaul
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove rear disc brake caliper assembly. Remove outer rear brake pad by slipping down caliper leg until clip is disengaged. Remove inner rear
brake pad by pulling it straight out of piston.
2. Apply air pressure to the fluid port in the rear disc brake caliper with Rubber-Tipped Air Gun D93L-7000-A or equivalent to remove rear disc
brake piston. If the rear disc brake piston is seized and cannot be forced from rear disc brake caliper, rear disc brake caliper assembly must be
replaced.
CAUTION: Do not use a screwdriver or any similar tool to pry rear disc brake piston out of bore. It will result in damage to rear disc brake
piston. Cushion piston's impact against rear disc brake caliper when blowing it out of bore by placing a wooden block or shop towels between rear
disc brake piston and caliper bridge.
ASSEMBLY
1. When assembling rear disc brake caliper, examine rear disc brake piston for surface irregularities. Replace caliper piston if damaged. Be sure to
clean foreign material from piston surfaces and lubricate with brake fluid before inserting into rear disc brake caliper. Always install new seal and
dust boot.
Retracting Caliper
2. When installing caliper piston back into bore, use a wood block or another flat stock, like an old rear brake pad assembly, between C-clamp and
caliper Piston.
CAUTION: Do not apply C-clamp directly to piston surface. This can result in damage to caliper piston. Be sure caliper piston is not cocked.
3. Make sure dust boot is tight in boot groove on caliper piston and in rear disc brake caliper.
4. To install inner rear brake pad with three-finger clip attached to shoe into piston, grab each end of shoe, making it square with caliper piston. Push
firmly until shoe clip snaps into piston. Do not allow shoe or clip tangs to cock during installation.
5. install rear disc brake caliper.
