Coolant: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

LEVEL CHECK 
Check engine coolant level in the degas bottle at least once a month.
With a cold engine, the engine coolant level must be maintained at or above the COLD FILL LEVEL mark.
At normal engine operating temperature, the engine coolant level should be above the COLD FILL LEVEL mark. If engine coolant level in the degas
bottle is less than the above indicated levels, a 50/50 mixture of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or B (in Oregon,
F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada Motorcraft CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water should be added to the degas
bottle to the specified levels.

INSPECTION - COLD 

If no engine coolant is observed in the degas bottle or when a coolant level change does not occur, check the system as follows:

NOTE:  The pressure relief cap used on this system is unique. Replace only with the proper pressure relief cap.

1. With the engine cold, remove the pressure relief cap and inspect the filler neck sealing gasket for foreign material between the gasket and pressure

relief cap diaphragm. Refer to Pressure Relief Cap Cleaning and Inspection. Rinse pressure relief cap in clean water.

2. Replenish the engine coolant in the radiator (8005) and add coolant to degas bottle as required.
3. Install the pressure relief cap.

NOTE:  A low engine coolant level in the radiator can cause poor heater and defroster performance. If this condition exists, perform the following
test.

INSPECTION - HOT 

1. With cold engine, remove pressure relief cap.
2. With a 50/50 mixture of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or-B (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada Motorcraft

CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A solution and water, fill degas bottle to indicated level and replace pressure
relief cap.

3. Start the engine and run until the water thermostat (8575) opens.
4. Observe the level of engine coolant in the degas bottle. The minimum level should be as indicated on degas bottle. If not, adjust engine coolant

level by adding 50/50 mixture of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid and water.

5. Check for leakage at the following locations:

All hoses and hose connections

^

Radiator seams, radiator core and radiator draincock (8115)

^

All cylinder block core plugs and drain plugs

^

Edges of all cooling system gaskets

^

Transmission fluid cooler fittings

^

Vehicle heating system components

^

Water pump (8501).

6. Examine oil level dipstick (6750) for evidence of engine coolant in engine oil.
7. Check radiator for evidence of oil in coolant.
8. Install cooling system analyzer to assist in testing the cooling system. Follow the manufacturer's recommended connections and testing procedures.
