Make note of module(s) and system(s) with which vehicle is NOT equipped.
^
Make sure DTC being diagnosed is referencing module(s) or system(s) with which the vehicle is equipped.
^
The New Generation Star (NGS) tester may produce a NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED network DTC for no communication if the vehicle is
not equipped with the suspect module(s) or system(s).
^
The New Generation Star tester will interpret a module not equipped condition as a communication failure.
^
If a DTC is retrieved for a not equipped module(s) or system(s), disregard the DTC.
^
If a NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED DTC is the only DTC retrieved, the communication system self-test should be considered as passed.
Pinpoint Test Notes
The No Communication test(s) must be performed to verify power and ground to the suspect module(s) before performing any of the following pinpoint
tests. Go to referencing section for test.
Do not perform any of the following pinpoint tests unless you are so instructed. Each pinpoint test assumes that a fault has been detected in the system
with direction to enter a specific diagnostic routine. Performing any pinpoint test without direction may produce incorrect results and replacement of
working components. Correct test results are dependent on the proper operation of related components/systems. Correct any concerns in these areas to
pass the test.
Do not replace any parts unless the test results so indicate.
When more than one DTC is received, always start with the first DTC received.
Follow correct pinpoint test procedures steps in order. Follow each step until a condition is found.
After completing any service to communication system, verify all components are properly reconnected, then clear all DTCs.
Data Link Diagnostic Test
1. Perform New Generation Star Tester Hookup and Vehicle Selection.
NOTE: The ignition switch must be in RUN position or test will fail. This test is used to verify the proper operation of communication circuit of
each module on the J1850 communication network or ISO 9141 communication network
2. Rotate dial to menu item "Diagnostic Data Link" and press trigger.
3. If results of Circuit 914 (+) = SYSTEM PASSED and Circuit 915 (-) = SYSTEM PASSED, then the J1850 communication network test passed. If
any other display is returned, then go to Communication Systems Diagnostics.
4. If results of Circuit 70 (LB/W) = SYSTEM PASSED, then the J1850 Communication Link Test passed. If any other display is returned, See:
