Starter Armature: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
ARMATURE COIL
1. Inspect starter motor armature windings for broken or burned insulation and unwelded or open connections.
2. Check starter motor armature for open circuits, shorts and grounds. Check for rubs on pole or magnetic shunts.
3. Check commutator for runout. Inspect armature shaft and two bushings for scoring and excessive wear with Dial Indicator/Magnetic Base
D78P-4201-B or equivalent. If commutator is rough, or more than 0.12 mm (0.005 inch) out of round, it must be replaced.
