Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Assembly
1. Mount the valve housing in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B with the flanged end up.
NOTE: Before assembling components into the valve housing, liberally coat seal lips with multipurpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent
meeting Ford specifications ESB-M1C93-A and ESR-M1C159-A.
2. Apply a light coat of Power Steering Fluid MERCON ATF.
3. Carefully install the valve/worm assembly in the steering gear housing.
4. Refer to special torque procedure described in Specifications. See: Specifications Install the race nut in the steering gear housing. Tighten nut to
75-120 Nm (56-88 ft. lbs.) using Adjuster and Locknut Wrench T66P-3553-B and Spacer-Valve Housing to Piston T66P-3553-C.
5. Install the Allen head race nut setscrew through the valve housing. Tighten to 1-2 Nm (9-17 inch lbs.).
6. Place the piston on the bench with the ball guide holes up. Insert the worm shaft into the piston so the first groove is in-line with the hole nearest
the center of the piston.
