Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Flushing
Always flush the power steering gear when replacing the power steering pump due to fluid contamination.
1. Remove the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley and service the power steering pump.
2. Install the power steering pump pulley on the serviced power steering pump. Install the power steering pump. Flush the power steering pump
before installing.
NOTE: Connect only the power steering pressure hose.
3. Place the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear in a container and plug the power steering reservoir pump hose.
4. Fill the power steering oil reservoir with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification
ESW-M2C33-F.
5. Disconnect ignition coil wire and raise the front wheels off the ground.
6. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallons) of Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification
ESW-M2C33-F, turn the ignition switch to the START position and crank the engine with the starter motor while turning the steering wheel from
left to right.
7. When all the fluid has been added, turn ignition switch to the OFF position and connect ignition coil wire.
8. Remove the plug from the power steering reservoir pump hose and connect the power steering reservoir pump hose to the power steering oil
reservoir.
9. Check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary. Do not overfill the power steering oil reservoir.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock without hitting the stops to expel any trapped air.
