Steering Shaft: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove bolt from upper steering column intermediate shaft coupling. Collapse steering column intermediate shaft coupling.
2. Remove three nuts retaining primary steering column tube boot and remove steering column tube boot.
3. Remove bolt retaining lower steering column shaft to steering gear input shaft.
CAUTION: Be sure the steering column is in the locked position. The lower end of the steering column may be wired in such a way to prevent
the steering wheel from being turned and damaging air bag sliding contact.
4. From inside of vehicle, remove lower steering column shaft.
5. Remove secondary steering column tube boot.
INSTALLATION
1. Turn secondary steering column tube boot inside out and position over three mounting studs.
2. Install lower steering column shaft through steering column tube boot from engine compartment. Install new bolt and tighten to 25-35 Nm (19-25
ft. lbs.).
3. Install primary steering column tube boot over lower steering column shaft and down onto three studs in dash panel.
4. Install three boot retaining nuts. Tighten to 5-7 Nm (45-61 inch lbs.).
5. Extend steering column intermediate shaft coupling and insert into steering column intermediate shaft coupling at end of steering column. Tighten
bolt to 25-35 Nm (19-25 ft. lbs.).
6. Check steering column for proper operation.
