Shift Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. From under instrument panel, remove cable plastic terminal from the gearshift lever pivot ball by prying with a screwdriver between cable plastic

terminal and transmission range selector lever.

2. Remove shift cable and bracket from the steering column tube.
3. Raise vehicle.

4. Remove shift cable and bracket from transmission shift cable bracket by unlocking lock tabs of shift actuator cable fitting and sliding cable out of

bracket.

5. Remove nut retaining cable to transmission manual control lever stud and remove cable from stud.
6. Remove shift cable and bracket from transmission torque converter housing and frame rail. Lower vehicle.
7. From engine compartment, unseat cable grommet from cowl and shift cable and bracket on engine compartment side and pull cable out of cowl.

INSTALLATION 

1. From engine compartment, feed plastic terminal end of cable through cowl.
2. From passenger compartment, pull the rubber grommet on the transmission range selector cable into dash panel opening and seat it securely.
3. Install transmission range selector cable into steering column transmission shift cable bracket. Use shift actuator cable fitting and make sure that

locking tab is fully seated.

4. Install shift cable and bracket to steering column casting.
5. Attach cable plastic terminal to shift lever pivot ball. Place transmission range selector lever in OVERDRIVE position and hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb)

weight on the end.

NOTE:  Apply small amount of grease to column selector lever pivot ball, or cable terminal.

6. From engine compartment, route the shift cable to bracket on crossmember and through clip on fuel rail bracket. Insert clip on cable into hole in

bracket. Position the cable so that the white band on cable is 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) from the grommet.

7. Raise vehicle. Install cable in shift cable bracket. Clip the transmission shift cable into transmission bracket. Ensure locking tabs are fully seated.
8. Place transmission in OVERDRIVE by rotating the lever counter clockwise to stop. Rotate lever clockwise two stops.
9. Align transmission shift cable paddle slot on transmission manual control lever stud shoulders while tightening nut to specification.

10. Lower vehicle.
11. Remove 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
