Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove tilt wheel handle and shank by unscrewing it from the steering column release lever.
2. Turn ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position. Using a 1/8 inch drift, press ignition switch retaining pin through access hole and remove

ignition switch lock cylinder.

3. Remove lower instrument panel cover retaining screws and remove cover.
4. Remove four retaining screws from lower steering column shroud. Remove upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud.
5. Remove shift lever cover, gearshift lever pin and gearshift lever.

6. If necessary, remove shift lever clip.

INSTALLATION

1. If removed, install shift lever clip into opening in gearshift lever as shown in the illustration.
2. Insert gearshift lever through hole in steering column opening weather seal. Position cover on gearshift lever.
3. Insert gearshift lever into opening in control selector upper shaft.
4. Install a new gearshift lever pin into position and tap in place until the head seats against steering column opening seal and the Tinnerman nut is

visible on bottom of shifter housing.

5. Position shift lever seal assembly on the steering column lock cylinder housing. Insert lower attachment into the slot on side of steering column

lock cylinder housing.

6. Position upper attachment on mounting pin and press into place. Install a Tinnerman nut to secure cover to pedestal on steering column lock

cylinder housing.

7. Install upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud with four screws.
8. Install lower instrument panel cover and retaining screws.
9. Install ignition switch lock cylinder into steering column lock cylinder housing.

10. Install tilt wheel handle and shank onto steering column release lever.
11. Check for proper start in PARK and NEUTRAL. Make sure start circuit cannot be actuated in DRIVE or REVERSE positions and that the steering

column is locked in the LOCK position.
