Disassembly, Models W/Manual Transaxle
Disassemble driveshaft in numerical order, Fig. 9, noting the following:
1.
When clamping shaft in vise, use wood against jaws to avoid damage.
2.
Do not allow dust or foreign matter to enter joint during disassembly or assembly.
3.
Do not disassemble ball joint at wheel side and do not wipe off grease unless necessary.
4.
Do not remove clip which is used to secure outer ring to ball joint at differential side unless necessary. If clip is removed, install new one.
5.
To remove boot band, pry up locking clip with screwdriver, then raise end of band.
6.
Paint alignment marks on driveshaft and outer ring, then remove clip with flat tipped screwdriver.
7.
Using punch, place alignment marks on driveshaft end and inner ring, then remove snap ring with suitable pliers.
8.
Disassemble balls, inner ring and cage as follows:
a. Insert a flat tipped screwdriver between inner ring and cage and remove balls.
b. Paint alignment marks on inner ring and cage.
c. Turn cage approximately 30 degrees, then pull it away from inner ring.
Inspection, Models W/Manual Transaxle
1.
Inspect for twisted, bent or damaged shaft, replacing as necessary.
2.
Check for worn or scored splines, replacing as necessary.
3.
Check for worn, rusted, damaged or loose ball joint, replacing as necessary.
4.
Check for excessive looseness, seizure or rust in ball joint, replacing as necessary.
5.
Inspect boots for cracks, damage or deterioration, replacing as necessary.
Assembly, Models W/Manual Transaxle
Assemble in reverse order of disassembly, noting the following:
1.
Install dynamic damper on right hand side driveshaft before assembling joint to shaft.
2.
Apply black grease, supplied with kit, to ball joint.
3.
Before putting boot on shaft, put tape on shaft splines.
