Install components in reverse numbered sequence Fig. 40, noting the following:
a. Apply engine oil to new lash adjuster and pour oil into reservoir in rocker arm.
b. On 1.6L/4-97 engine, assemble rocker arm and shaft assembly as shown in Fig. 42. There are two types of rocker arms with different offsets.

One type for No. 1 and 2 cylinders and another type for No. 3 and 4 cylinders, these rocker arms cannot be interchanged.

c. On 1.6L/4-97 engine, rocker arm shaft oil holes must face downward.
d. On 1.8L/4-112 engine, assemble rocker arm and shaft assembly as shown in Fig. 43. Face shaft identification mark upward.
e. On all models, torque shaft assembly gradually in sequence shown in Fig. 44, to 16-21 ft. lbs.
