Daytime Running Lamp Control Unit: Description and Operation

DRL Relay And Control Unit

^ The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) System operates to automatically turn "ON" vehicle exterior lights whenever the ignition is switched "ON."  The

system functions independent of the headlight switch.  However, the switch must be turned "ON" for running lights to operate whenever ignition is
switched "OFF" or parking brake is applied.  The system consists of a control unit, relay, ECU and necessary wiring and harness connections.

^ When the DRL system is activated, a signal is sent to the ECU.  Because electrical load affects idle speed, the ECU factors system "ON" or "OFF"

into idle speed control calculations.
