APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2004-2009 Mazda3 (including Mazdaspeed3) with VINS lower than JM1BK******251214 (produced before November 1, 2008)

2006-2009 Mazda5 with VINS lower than JM1CR******348657 (produced before November 1, 2008)

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may experience a fuel filler cap that is hard to tighten and MIL ON with DTC P0442, P0455, and P0456 stored. This is caused by fuel
filler caps contacting the filler pipe before being fully tightened, and EVAP gas leaks due to insufficient cap sealing. The design of the fuel filler cap has
now been changed.

P0442: EVAP system leak detected (small leak)

P0455: EVAP system leak detected (gross leak/no flow)

P0456: EVAP system leak detected (very small leak)

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Refer to SB 01-021/09 for troubleshooting, then replace the fuel filler cap with modified one as necessary.

3. Verify repair.
