Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Front Belt
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove drive belts, then the right hand splash shield.
3.
Remove cylinder head cover with gasket, then the crankshaft pulley.
4.
Remove timing belt covers and sealing rubbers.
5.
Turn crankshaft to align front camshaft pulley and front seal plate timing marks.
6.
Loosen belt tensioner lock bolt and push tensioner as far as it will go, then tighten lock bolt.
7.
Remove torque stopper, then the timing belt. If reusing timing belt, mark direction of rotation on belt.
8.
Turn crankshaft approximately 45° from timing mark which is marked on oil pump housing.
9.
Counterhold camshaft and loosen front camshaft pulley lock bolt.
10.
Using suitable puller, remove front camshaft pulley. Do not hit front camshaft pulley with a hammer.
11.
Remove crankshaft timing belt pulley. Use tire lever or similar tool to hold flywheel ring gear when loosening timing belt crankshaft pulley
lock bolt.
12.
Install timing belt crankshaft pulley to crankshaft with Woodruff drive key and the retaining washer, torquing to 116-123 ft.lbs. Use a tire lever or
similar tool to hold flywheel ring gear when tightening lock bolt.
13.
Install front camshaft pulley on camshaft with Woodruff key, torquing to 41-48 ft.lbs. Use suitable tool to counterhold camshaft when tightening
lock bolt.

Align mark on camshaft pulley with mark on front seal plate, Fig. 30.

15.
Return crankshaft approximately 45° to timing mark on oil pump housing, Fig. 31.
16.
Install tensioner, lock bolt and spring in fully loosened position, then push tensioner left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten it.
17.
Install timing belt. If reusing old belt, reinstall in original direction of rotation.
18.
Release tensioner lock bolt to allow spring pressure to bear on belt, then turn crankshaft to full rotations clockwise.
19.
Torque tensioner lock bolt to 23-34 ft.lbs.
20.
Ensure timing marks are aligned and check timing belt deflection at midpoint of right side. Belt should deflect .41-.47 inch under a force of 22 lbs.
21.
Install torque stopper, then the timing belt covers with sealing rubbers. Torque timing belt cover attaching bolts to 5-7 ft.lbs.
22.
Install crankshaft pulley on crankshaft with dowel pin, torquing to 17-24 ft.lbs.
23.
Install right side splash shield, cylinder head cover with PCV hose and the drive belt.
