Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Turn crankshaft so that No. 1 cylinder piston is at top dead center, then drain engine coolant.
3.
Remove air cleaner assembly, then the distributor.
4.
Remove thermostat, then the fuel pump.
5.
Remove accelerator cable.
6.
Remove intake manifold and carburetor assembly.
7.
On models equipped with A/C, remove alternator and alternator bracket.
8.
On models equipped with A/C, remove compressor.
9.
On all models, remove engine ground wire.
10.
Remove upper timing belt cover, then the timing belt.
11.
Remove secondary air pipes, then the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
12.
Remove manifold insulator assembly, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
13.
Remove cylinder head rear housing and gasket.
14.
Remove valve cover and gasket.

Gradually loosen and remove cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 2.
16.
Remove cylinder head and exhaust manifold, then the cylinder head gasket.

Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head attaching bolts to specifications in sequence, Fig. 18.
