Seat Belt Operation
DESCRIPTION
Different locking devices are used for driver and front passenger seat belt systems on
1983 626 sedan and hatchback models.
When pulling out these belts rather rapidly, the systems operate somewhat diversely, but this is normal. It is important to understand the difference in the
operation of the belts so that unnecessary replacement can be avoided because of unmatched systems.
Listed below are three types of locking devices used in the 1983 626 seat belts. Each belt will use one or more of these locking devices.
1.
The inertia locking device is activated when the vehicle accelerates or decelerates rapidly. A weight becomes upset, locking a ratchet. The inertia
locking device is the basic device used in each seat belt design.
2.
The webbing locking device clamps down directly on the belt and is used to eliminate any slack in the spool. It is activated only after the inertia
lock has been tripped.
3.
The speed sensing device is activated by rapid extraction of the belt from the spool. As the spool starts to rotate quickly a ratchet is tripped by
sensing the change in speed.
