Tie Rod Boot: Service and Repair

1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove boot in numerical sequence, Fig. 4, noting the following:
a. Use tool 490727575 or equivalent to separate tie rod end from knuckle.
b. Before removing nut from tie rod end, scribe alignment marks on end, nut and tie rod.
c. Secure tie rod end in vise and use hammer and chisel to remove boot. Be careful not to damage part where boot is attached to tie rod end.
3.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Put a small amount of lithium grease into new boot and, using tool 498038785 or equivalent, press new boot onto tie rod end.
b. Torque tie rod end to tie rod nut to 51-72 ft. lbs.
c. Torque tie rod end to knuckle attaching nut to 22-33 ft. lbs.
d. Torque lug nuts to 65-87 ft. lbs.
