Warning Light Inspection

Turn the ignition switch to the On position and ensure the warning light illuminates. Start the engine and ensure the warning light goes off. If light does
not go off, proceed to Warning Light Stays On.

Warning Light Will Not Illuminate

1. Turn ignition switch to On position and ensure other warning lamps illuminate. If not, check for bad fuse or wiring harness problems.
2. Ensure battery voltage exists at alternator terminal L. If not, repair bad wiring or replace bulb.
3. If other warning lamps illuminated with ignition switch in On position and battery voltage was present at terminal L, replace IC regulator.

Warning Light Stays on

1. Ensure there is 12 volts present at terminal L of alternator. If not, repair wiring harness.
2. Ensure no-load output current inspection is good; refer to No-Load Test. If not, check for rotor coil malfunction.
3. Ensure load output current inspection is good. If not, check for stator coil, diodes or wiring harness malfunction between B terminal and battery +

terminal.

4. Ensure output voltage inspection is good, refer to Output Voltage Test. If not, inspect IC regulator and wiring between terminal S and L and 

battery are functioning properly

5. If preceding steps did not expose a problem, check for poor connection of battery ground cable or poor connection between alternator and battery

positive cable.

Battery Discharged

1. Ensure battery voltage is at least 12.4 volts. If not, inspect battery.
2. If alternator warning lamp illuminates while engine is running, refer to Load Test in Diagnosis & Testing. If not, refer to Voltage Output Test.
3. If load test is good, inspect battery for parasitic drain. If load test fails, inspect for loose belt.
4. If voltage output is good, there is a wiring harness malfunction between relay and warning lamp. If test is bad, there is a wiring or alternator

malfunction.
