While the pinion is pulled out, check pinion gap, Fig. 5.
2.
Pinion gap should be between .02-.08 inch. Adjust pinion gap by placing an adjustment washer between drive housing front cover and magnetic
switch.
Pull-In Test
For this procedure, it is necessary to remove starter magnetic switch from starter.
1.
Connect battery positive to S terminal of magnetic switch. Ground magnetic switch M terminal.
2.
Ensure plunger is pulled into switch.
Pull-Out Test

Connect 12 volts to terminal S of starter solenoid, and ground starter body, Fig. 4.
2.
Ensure pinion is pulled out.
Return Test
1.
Disconnect motor wire from terminal M. Connect 12 volts to terminal M and ground starter body.
2.
Using a screwdriver, pull out overrunning clutch. Ensure overrunning clutch returns to its original position when released.
