Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
Rear Axle Hub & Bearing
Removal

1.
Raise and support vehicle and remove wheel.
2.
Uncrimp tab of locknut and remove locknut and washer, Fig. 1.
3.
Place alignment marks on driveshaft and flange and remove driveshaft.
4.
Remove caliper attaching bolts and suspend caliper out of way.
5.
Remove disc plate attaching screws and the disc plate.
6.
Remove parking brake shoe assembly and disconnect parking brake cable and wheel speed sensor.
7.
Disconnect trailing arm and shock absorber from knuckle.
8.
Disconnect stabilizer control link.
9.
Disconnect upper and front and rear lower control links using tool 490727575 or equivalent to detach links.
10.
Remove rear hub support assembly.
11.
Using tools 49H026108 and 49F026102, or equivalents, press off axle flange.
12.
Remove oil seal, retaining ring and rear axle bearing. If bearing inner race remains on axle flange, use a grinder to grind a section of the
bearing inner race until only approximately .0197 inch (.5mm) remains, then remove with chisel.
13.
Remove dust cover.
Inspection
1.
Check rear hub support for cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
2.
Check axle flange for seizure, cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
3.
Check dust cover for cracks or damage, replacing as necessary.
Installation
1.
Install dust cover and tentatively tighten bolts.
2.
Using tools 49B001797, 49F027007 and 49H026104, or equivalents, press in new bearing.
3.
Install retaining ring and new oil seal, then apply grease to oil seal lip.
4.
Using tools 49F026102 and 49H026104, or equivalents, press on axle flange.
5.
Reverse removal procedure to complete installation, noting the following:
a. Install rear lower link and torque wheel side to specification.
b. Install front lower link and torque wheel side to specification.
c. Install upper link and torque wheel side to specification.
d. Install rear hub support, torquing to specification.
