Muffler: Service and Repair
MUFFLER AND TAILPIPE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L
Removal Note
Caution:
-
Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. These lubricants may cause deterioration of the rubber. This can lead to
separation of the isolator from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the exhaust V-pipe assembly-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts, flag nuts and gasket.
3. Disconnect the 3 rubber isolators and remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly.
Installation Note
Caution:
-
Do not tighten the exhaust system fasteners until all components are assembled and aligned, making sure to tighten all fasteners
beginning at the front of the vehicle.

Note:

Clean the mating surface of the exhaust downpipe or the catalytic converter and the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Make sure not to damage
the exhaust downpipe or the catalytic converter and the muffler and tailpipe assembly mating surfaces.
1. Position the muffler and tailpipe assembly into the vehicle and connect the 3 rubber isolators.
2. Install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly gasket.
3. Loosely install the exhaust downpipe-to-muffler and tailpipe assembly bolts and nuts.
4. Align the exhaust system.
Tightening torque 40 Nm {4.1 kgf-m, 30 ft-Ibf}
5. Lower the vehicle.
