Worm-Shaft, Ball Nut (10 & 9)
NOTE: Replace the worm-shaft and ball nut assembly as a unit.
Inspect the worm-shaft and ball nut assembly for tightness or binding by turning the worm-shaft in the ball nut. If binding or tightness are
indicated, replace the assembly as a unit.
Housing (16)
NOTE: If one or more of the needles fall out, they may be cleaned and put back using more steering gear lube to hold them in place.
Sector Shaft (3)
1. Inspect the sector gear teeth for chipping, excessive wear and surface breakdown. Replace the sector shaft if damage is found.
2. Measure the clearance between the sector adjusting screw head and the bottom of the sector T-slot. The clearance should be a maximum of
0.10 mm (0.004 inch).
3. Add shims as required to reduce the clearance to the specification.
4. While holding the sector adjuster screw, turn the sector shaft back and forth. The sector shaft must turn freely. If the sector shaft does not turn
freely, increase the T-slot clearance using an appropriate shim from the lash adjuster kit. However, make sure that the resulting clearance is not
more than 0.10 mm (0.004 inch).
ASSEMBLY
1. Follow disassembly steps outlined in the illustration in reverse order for assembly, referring to the following:
Worm-Shaft Seal (15)
Install the worm-shaft seal using Bearing Cup Replacer T82T-3504-AH, or equivalent.
