Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation
MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR
Detects intake air mass. Outputs analog voltage signal to PCM. PCM controls operation as follows:
1. Required fuel injector pulse width
2. EPC
3. Shift/torque converter clutch scheduling
Operation
Uses a hot wire sending element to measure intake air mass. Hot wire is maintained at 200°C (392°F) above ambient temperature as measured by a
constant cold wire. Air passing hot wire causes it to cool. The current required to maintain hot wire temperature is proportional to air mass flow. MAF
then outputs signal to PCM.
-
If the mass air flow sensor or circuit has an open or short, Diagnostic Trouble Code No. P0l02, P0103, P1100 or P1101 is output.
-
A malfunction in the mass air flow sensor circuit may cause lack of power, poor acceleration, hesitate at Driveaway or vehicle shake on
deceleration.
-
If battery power circuit shorts to ground, engine may stall and may not restart. This will melt EEC PWR fuse.
