EGR Valve: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve recirculates a small amount of exhaust gas into the intake manifold to reduce the combustion
temperature and reduce the NOx emissions.
OPERATION
The Powertrain Control Module controls the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid which regulates the vacuum supply the EGR Valve. The EGR
valve opens when vacuum is applied to the valve diaphragm; when open the valve connects a passage between the intake manifold and the exhaust
manifold.
This allows a metered flow of EGR gasses to enter the intake air stream.
