DESCRIPTION
A "ping" or "creak" noise may be heard from the driveline when engine torque is applied (ex. shifting gears or engaging clutch). The cause of the noise is
the rear yoke snapping across the spine clearance on the output shaft as torque is applied from the driveline.
To correct this problem, the torque specification for the yoke nut has been changed.
Customers complaining of this condition should have the yoke nut torqued to the higher value. If this does not resolve the problem, replace the output
shaft with a redesigned part. The redesigned part has a tighter spline fit.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Loosen the output shaft nut enough to release any preload.
2.
Check for noise at the output yoke.
3.
If noise is not present, the output yoke is the source of the noise. Proceed to step 5.
4.
If noise is present, diagnose the noise according to the instructions in the workshop manual or the NVH manual.
5.
Tighten the output shaft to the new specification. Tightening Torque: 250 - 280 ft/lbs. (340 - 380 Nm)
6.
Check for noise at the output yoke.
7.
If the noise is gone, return the vehicle to the customer.
8.
If the noise is still present, replace the output shaft in the transfer case according to the instructions in section J2 of the workshop manual.
9.
Tighten the yoke nut to the new specifications. Tightening Torque: 250 - 280 ft/lbs. (340 - 380 Nm)
