DESCRIPTION
The rear brakes may grab or squeal on the first few applications after the vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time. This problem may occur in
the morning when the weather is cool and the brakes are damp.
The problem is caused by the brake lining's sensitivity to high humid conditions. To correct this condition, new linings are available that are less
sensitive to humidity.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, the linings replaced with the new type. Also, seal the
following areas to prevent moisture from entering the rear brake assemblies. Refer to step 7 & 8 below.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify the concern.

If the concern is present, proceed to step 2.

If the concern is not present, inspect the brake system for other causes of noise or grabbing.
2.
Remove and discard the brake shoes. Refer to section P of the workshop manual.
3.
Inspect the wheel cylinder bores (under the boots) for rust. Remove rust if found.
4.
Clean the brake assembly and drums.
NOTE:
Follow all general shop safety practices and OSHA regulations when cleaning brake components.
5.
Inspect the rear drums according to the instructions in section P of the workshop manual.

If the drums are within specification, lightly machine the drum surface to remove any glaze.
6.
Clean the exterior of the backing plate with a degreaser or equivalent.
7.
Seal the exterior of the backing plate with rubberized undercoating at the junction of the rear axle flange and the wheel cylinder area.
8.
Seal the parking brake cable to the backing plate fitting with RTV silicone sealer.
9.
Install the new brake shoe lining assemblies according to section P of the workshop manual.
10.
Adjust the brakes according to section P of the workshop manual.
11.
Verify the repair.
