Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair
Overdrive Servo
OVERDRIVE SERVO (4R44E) OR FRONT SERVO (5R55E) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
Removal Note
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the control valve body.
4. Remove the shift cable.
1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.
2. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.
5. Remove the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor. Refer to Powertrain Management; Computers and Control Systems; Transmission Position
Switch/Sensor.
6. Remove the transmission modulator heat shield (5R55E only).
7. Remove the overdrive/front band locknut and unscrew the overdrive/front band adjusting screw.

Discard the overdrive/front band locknut after removal.
8. Remove the catalytic converter.
Caution Servo cover is under spring pressure.
9. Using SST, remove the overdrive band servo cover retaining ring.
1. 1nstall the SST and compress the overdrive/front band servo cover.
2. Remove the overdrive/front servo cover retaining ring.

Slowly remove tension on the J-hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.
10. Remove servo cover, piston and spring by gently pushing on hook-type tool. Use a small piece of cardboard of similar material to prevent tool
from damaging passage.
Installation Note
