DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a squeal or whistle type noise coming from the front of the vehicle at speeds of 10 to 40 mph (16 to 64 km/h). This noise may
be caused by the front drive axle dust seals as they rotate against the inner front hubs. This condition maybe more pronounced in cold weather
conditions.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify customer concern.
2.
Remove right front drive axle shaft according to Workshop Manual (section 03-13).
3.
Remove dust seal by prying it off the shaft (see illustration).
4.
Clean outer race of CV joint to remove any foreign matter.
5.
Install modified dust seal by pressing it on by hand or with an appropriate tool.
Note:
^
Install modified dust seal with all seal markings facing the bell of the joint (away from the stem).

Be careful to only press on the exposed steel portion of the seal. Start the seal on the drive axle by hand, and then press on the exposed steel
portion of the seal in 20 degree increments around the seal until it is fully seated and parallel to the CV joint face. Use care to avoid damaging the
rubber portion of the seal.
6.
Spread approximately 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick bead of high temperature wheel bearing grease on the new seal lips.
7.
Clean the inner surface of the knuckle, ensuring that the seal facing metal surface is smooth.
8.
Install drive axle.
9.
Perform STEPS 2-8 on left front drive axle.
10.
Verify repair.
