Steering Gear: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Turn the steering wheel as necessary to position wheels in the straight-ahead position. Do not lock the steering column.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
4. If so equipped, remove the fluid cooler.

5. Remove the cotter pins and nuts at the tie rod ends.
6. Separate the tie rod ends from the spindles, using a pitman arm puller or equivalent tool.

(1) Do not damage the tie rod end boot seals.

7. Turn the steering column shaft as necessary to access the steering column coupling pinch bolt.

8. Remove the pinch bolt.

CAUTION:  Do not rotate the steering wheel when the lower steering column shaft is disconnected, or damage to the air bag sliding contact will
result.

9. Lock the steering column.

(1) Lower the vehicle.
(2) Turn the ignition switch to the locked position.
(3) Raise the vehicle.

10. Separate the steering column coupling from the steering gear.

11. Disconnect the high-pressure hose at the steering gear.
