Wheel Speed Sensor: Service and Repair
Toothed Ring

Front

Referal

For the removal and installation of the 4x4 front anti-lock brake sensor indicator, it is necessary to replace the Front Wheel Hub. 

Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain / Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints. 

Rear Axle

REMOVAL / INSTALLATION 

1. Remove the differential from the rear axle.
2. Remove the bolts retaining the ring gear to the differential case.
3. Remove the ring gear, refering to Removal Note.

NOTE:  Only remove speed sensor rotor if replacement is required. It does not have to be removed for ring bearing replacement.

4. Remove the speed sensor rotor by tapping with a soft-face hammer. Discard the speed sensor rotor, refering to Removal Note.

NOTE:  The exciter ring must be discarded upon removal. If removed, a new speed sensor rotor must be installed, refering to Removal Note.

5. Install in reverse order for removal, refering to Installation Note.

Ring Gear Removal Note 

Remove the ring gear by striking at alternate holes around the gear.

Speed Sensor Rotor Removal Note 

Remove the speed sensor rotor by tapping with a soft-face hammer. Discard the speed sensor rotor.

Ring Gear and Speed Sensor Rotor Installation Note 
1. Position ring gear and speed sensor rotor on differential case. The tab on the speed sensor rotor must be aligned with the slot in the differential

case as shown. Start two ring gear retaining bolts through the case into the ring gear to make sure case-to-ring gear bolt hole alignment is achieved.

CAUTION:  The tab on the speed sensor rotor must be aligned with the slot in the differential case.

2. Press the ring gear and speed sensor rotor on the differential case using the ring gear as a pilot.
3. Coat the threads of ring gear retaining bolts with sealant. Install bolts and alternately tighten evenly.

Tighten torque: 95 - 115 Nm (70 - 85 ft. lbs.)
