DESCRIPTION
The rear brakes may grab or squeal on the first few applications after the vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time. This problem may occur in
the morning when the brakes are cool and the weather is damp.
The problem is caused by the brake lining's sensitivity to high humidity conditions. To correct the problem, new linings are available that are less
sensitive to humidity.
Customers complaining of the problem should have the rear brake shoe linings replaced with the new type. Seal the following areas to prevent moisture
from entering the rear brake area.
^ Wheel Cylinder To Rear
^ Back Plate Parking Brake Cable To Backing Plate Fitting
^ Axle Flange To Backing Plate
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verity complaint.
2.
Remove and discard rear brake shoe linings. Refer to section P of the workshop manual.
3.
Inspect the wheel cylinder bores (under rubber boot) for rust. Remove any rust found.
4.
Clean the brake assembly and drums.
NOTE:
Follow all general shop safety practices and OSHA regulations when cleaning brake areas.
5.
Inspect the rear drums according to the instructions in section P of the workshop. If the drums are within specification, lightly sand brake drums to
remove any glaze.
6.
Clean exterior of the backing plate with degreaser or equivalent.
7.
Seal the exterior of the brake backing plate at the junction of the axle flange and wheel cylinder area with rubberized undercoating. Seal the
parking brake cable to the backing plate fitting with RTV silicone sealer.
8.
Install new rear brake shoe lining assemblies according to the instructions in section P of the workshop manual.
9.
Adjust brakes following the procedures in section P of the workshop manual.
10.
Verify repair.
