Camshaft: Testing and Inspection

1. Inspect camshaft journals for wear or scoring. If journals are excessively worn or scored, replace camshaft.
2. Measure camshaft journals for roundness and diameter at two points. The camshaft journals can be refinished to accommodate undersize (0.015

inch) bearings. If journals cannot be cleaned, replace camshaft.

3. Using V-blocks, measure runout. Runout should be 0.002 inch maximum.
4. Calculate camshaft lobe lift by measuring distance between major and minor diameters of each cam lobe with a suitable vernier caliper and record

readings. The difference between readings is lobe lift. If readings are not 0.3974 inch minimum, replace camshaft.

5. Measure camshaft diameter. Diameter should be 2.0074 - 2.0084 inches.
6. Calculate camshaft oil clearance by measuring journal diameter and bearing bore diameter. Subtract journal diameter from bearing bore diameter

to determine clearance. Clearance should be 0.0010 - 0.0026 inch.

7. Measure camshaft endplay. Endplay should be 0.009 inch maximum. If endplay does not meet specifications, replace thrust plate.
