Steering Gear: Service and Repair
With Manual Steering
Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Disengage flex coupling shield from steering gear input shaft shield and slide it up intermediate shaft.
3. Remove bolt and steering gear input shaft shield.
4. Remove pitman arm using removal tool No. T46P-3590-F, or equivalent.
5. Remove steering gear.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Rotate input shaft of steering gear stop to stop, counting total number of turns, then turn input shaft back exactly half way.
b. Slide steering gear input shaft shield on input shaft and install steering gear to side rail.
c. Install flex coupling to steering gear input shaft bolt.
d. Align two blocked teeth on pitman arm with four missing teeth on sector shaft, then place pitman arm on sector shaft.
Disassembly
1. Secure steering gear in a suitable vise and remove pitman arm.
2. Rotate wormshaft from stop to stop, counting total number of turns, then turn back exactly half way, Fig. 5.

3. Remove lash adjuster locknut.
