Starter Motor: Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
Starter Cranks Slowly
Inspect battery, starter and relay wires for corrosion, breakage and wear. Repair or replace as necessary.
Starter Does Not Crank, Relay Operates
Connect a jumper across terminals B and M of starter solenoid. If starter does not operate, repair or replace starter. If starter does operate, replace
solenoid.
Starter Does Not Crank, Relay Does Not Operate
1. Check for bad connections at starter relay.
2. Place transmission in Park or Neutral. Remove connector from relay.
3. Using a jumper wire, connect exposed terminal of relay connector to battery positive.
4. If this corrects problem, inspect ignition switch, neutral switch, clutch switch and wiring. If this does not correct problem, replace relay.
Starter Spins, Engine Does Not Crank
Inspect operation and wear of internal starter components. Inspect armature shaft for corrosion. If not corroded, drive assembly is slipping and must be
replaced.
