1997 B4000 with automatic transmissions
DESCRIPTION
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0756 and/or P1701 stored in memory.

P0756 may be caused by the characteristics of the 1-3 shift on the 5R55E automatic transmission combined with the sensitivity of the PCM
diagnostics calibration, even though the shift solenoid # 2 is functioning properly and third gear is obtained.

P1701 may be caused by the shift lever not reaching the proper position.
A modified PCM calibration is available which reduces the possibility of these concerns. Customers complaining of this concern should have their
vehicle inspected and if necessary have the PCM reprogrammed to the latest calibration.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify customer complaint.
2.
Retrieve and record all DTC's:

If DTC's P1701 or P0756 are present, proceed to STEP 3.

If any other DTC's are present, perform normal Workshop Manual Diagnosis.
3.
Determine repair based on DTC's:

If P1701 and P0756 DTCs are retrieved, check and adjust the TRS and shift cable as necessary and proceed to STEP 4.

If P0756 is the only DTC retrieved, proceed to STEP 4.
^
If P1701 is the only DTC retrieved, cheek the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) alignment and shift cable adjustment for proper shift
indicator function.

If adjustment is necessary, adjust the TRS or shift cable and proceed to STEP 5.
^
If adjustment is not necessary, proceed to STEP 4.
