TEMPERATURE GAUGE FLUCTUATES AND/OR KNOCK/THUMP NOISE

DESCRIPTION

A temperature gauge fluctuation and/or a "knocking/thumping" noise may be heard in the passenger compartment on some vehicles. This
fluctuation/noise is most pronounced with the engine at normal operating temperature. These symptoms are caused by steam formation in the cooling
system. The noise is transmitted through the heater hoses and heater core. A coolant by-pass kit is now available which increases coolant flow which
reduces steam formation.

Note:

For 1994-97 B-Series, refer to applicable Service Bulletin E-001/97.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Verify customer concern.

2.

Check the following items:

A.

Visually inspect exhaust system for restrictions.

Note:

A restricted exhaust could elevate cooling system temperatures.

B.

If dash-mounted cooling temperature gauge fluctuates, be sure the gauge and sending unit are functioning properly. Refer to Workshop
Manual (09-01G INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSIS).

C.

Check for restrictions or kinks in the radiator or heater hoses.

D.

Pressure check cooling system for leaks (Workshop Manual 01-12C RADIATOR PRESSURE TEST INSPECTION).

E.

Confirm proper Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor signal to EEC-V processor (Workshop Manual 01-01 TROUBLESHOOTING).

F.

Check cooling system including the proper mixture of water and engine coolant (Workshop Manual 01-12C COOLING SYSTEM
INSPECTION).

Mixture specification

Maximum range is 60/40.

Minimum range is 45/55.

If the symptoms are resolved, return vehicle to customer.

If symptoms still exists, install service coolant by-pass kit using the instructions enclosed in the kit (refer to PART(S) INFORMATION.
